Let’s Talk Books with Sarah Hope
Welcome to the final part of my ‘Let’s Talk Books’ series. Today my guest is a fellow Boldwood author. She writes small-town romance books set in beautiful places like Cornwall and the Cotswolds. Welcome to the blog, Sarah Hope!
It’s lovely to have you here, Sarah. First question. Can you remember the first book you ever read or owned?
Colin the Cucumber and Patrick Pear from The Garden Gang by Jayne Fisher. I loved all of the books in the series, but I distinctly remember Colin the Cucumber breaking his leg in the story and having to use crutches.
I’ve never heard of those. Sounds like I missed out! What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I loved reading when I was a child! I always had my nose in a book and books accompanied my EVERWHERE! Whether it was a trip to the beach, a short car journey to the shops or visiting my grandparents’ houses, I had a book. I had loads of favourites growing up, but I think the one which stuck with me the most was The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann. I even ended up writing to Colin Dann and telling him I wanted to be an author when I grew up and asking for his advice. I still have his reply safe somewhere.

Aw, that’s so sweet. How lovely of him to reply to you. If you were going to reread one children’s book now, which would you choose and why?
That’s easy, there’s one book from my childhood that holds particularly special memories for me and I reread it every year. I used to read it to my children when they were younger and now I read it to my nieces and nephew when they come to visit near Christmastime. When I was a teacher I made sure to read it to my class each year too. It’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Barbara Shook Hazen adapted from the story by Robert L. May.
My parents would read it to me and my sisters on Christmas Eve when we were younger.
Ha, now that is one book I’ve definitely heard of! What is your favourite book as an adult? Why is it your favourite?
Ahh, now that’s a super tricky question! I love reading so many different books by different authors I couldn’t possibly pick one!
Fair enough. We’ll let that one pass. Do you write in your favourite genre? If not, which genre/s do you love to read?
I write in one of my favourite genres – contemporary romance. I also love to read dystopian genres and really enjoy Christopher Artinian’s zombie series, The End of Everything and Safe Haven.
Well, that’s different! I don’t think I’ve ever read a dystopian novel. You couldn’t pick your favourite book by someone else, but which of your own books is your favourite?
I think my favourite series to write in is my Cornish Bakery series. I have twenty seven books out in that series so far and I find writing the core secondary characters is just like revisiting old friends. I know it sounds daft but I feel I’ve really gotten to know them over the series!

I really admire you being able to write twenty-seven books in one series. That’s amazing! Talking of your own books, which of them has your favourite cover and why?
I adore the cover to A Summer Wedding at Pennycress Inn. It’s so pretty!

Yes, you’re right. It is! Who is your favourite book character? Why do you like them so much?
Ah, I don’t think I could possibly choose one! I tend to fall in love with the characters in the book I’m currently reading so I couldn’t possibly pick just one!
Hmm. I think I should be a bit stricter with you, Sarah! What’s your favourite book to TV/film adaptation?
Me Before You adapted from Jojo Moyes’ book. Fantastic film and always makes me cry.

I’ve never read it or watched the film for that very reason, even though I love the two lead actors. I know enough about the story to know it would break my heart. What’s the most beautiful or precious book you’ve ever owned? Why is it so special?
That would be Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer again because it holds so many lovely Christmassy memories for me both from my childhood and when reading it to my own children.
I can definitely understand that. Which book do you wish you’d written?
Ha, so many! Probably any of Jojo Moyes’ books!
Can you tell us about your next book?
My latest release is called Repairs & Reunions in Nettleford-on-the-Wold and is Book Three in my Escape to… Nettleford-on-the Wold series (although all my books can be read as standalones too). The story follows Guide leader, Lucy, whose Guide group unexpectantly inherits an old rundown campsite. What she doesn’t realise in the beginning is that the campsite is gifted to both the Guide group and the local Scout group too and the Scout group is run by Carter, who broke her heart when she was a teen.
They’re forced together to work for the good of the community and as they rebuild the campsite, they begin to get to know each other again, but can she forgive him for his past actions which have shaped her entire adult life?
