Six Indie Writers of British Small-Town Romance Series
I love a small-town romance set in Britain (good job, since I write them!) and I love to support indie authors. Having written twenty-seven indie books of my own and with firm plans to write more, I know how hard it can be to publish books without a publisher to guide and market you. Yet these six authors have proved to be more than up to the challenge.
The indie author community is a strong and supportive one and I’ve made some lovely friends in it. If you love a small-town romance series, here are six indie authors whose books I think you should definitely check out.
Beth Rain
Beth is a prolific writer of small-town romances. She’s published several series as well as standalones.
You can visit the cosy villages of Little Bamton or Upper Bamton. Or why not head to the coast and visit Seabury? Then there’s Crumbleton, the little town on the hill. Or how about the Scottish island of Crumcarey?
About Beth:
Beth Rain has always wanted to be a writer and has been penning adventures for characters ever since she learned to stare into the middle-distance and daydream.
She has recently moved to a windswept, Scottish island, and it is a dream come true to spend her days hanging out with Bob – her trusty laptop – scoffing crisps and chocolate while dreaming up swoony love stories for all her imaginary friends.
Beth’s writing will always deliver on the happy-ever-afters, so if you need cosy… you’re in safe hands!

K.T. Dady
K.T. Dady has recently ventured into romantasy as Kate Dady, but she’s had incredible success writing small-town romance as K.T. Apart from the Port Berry series, published by Joffe Books, she’s done it all herself as part of her indie career - a fact she’s extremely (and deservedly) proud of. You can take a trip to popular Pepper Bay in her company. Or visit quirky Honeydale. Or perhaps you could journey to her new village of Butterbrook.
About K.T.:
K.T. Dady writes uplifting love stories filled with friendship, family, and community set here, there, and everywhere, as love happens anywhere and under all sorts of circumstances. But whatever challenges her characters face along the way, there is always a happily ever after.

Emily Harvale
Emily was smashing it as an indie author a few years before I’d even finished writing my first book! She really was one of the first leading small-town romance authors in the indie field and has made a name for herself with standalone novels and novellas, as well as some wonderful series: Goldebury Bay, Lily Pond Lane, Bluewater Bay, Hall’s Cross, Merriment Bay, Michaelmas Bay, Seahorse Harbour, Hideaway Down, Wyntersleap, Norman Landing Seaside Village, Locke Isle, Clementine Cove, Betancourt Bay and Midwinter Lane.
About Emily:
Emily writes novels, novellas and short stories about friendship, family, the things life throws at us, and falling in love. She loves a happy ending but knows that life doesn't always go to plan. Her stories are sure to bring a smile to your face and a warmth to your heart. She is a full member of the Society of Authors and since her first book was published in 2012, several of her books have been best sellers.
Emily lives in East Sussex, UK, minutes from the sea in a town called Hastings - famous for the Battle of 1066. The stunning surrounding countryside and quaint English villages often appear in her books. Emily lives with her rescue cat, Portia, and when she's not writing, she loves to read, cook, drink (too much) wine with her friends, and potter in her garden. She also loves skiing, adores frolicking in the snow, and is a self-confessed lover of Christmas - which can't start too early, in her opinion.

Margaret Amatt
Margaret has three excellent small-town series set in Scotland. These are: Scottish Island Escapes, Love on the Edge - Barra, and the long-running Glenbriar series. The spin-off to the latter, Glenbriar Castle, will be coming in 2027! She has been prolific and extremely successful since launching her career just five years ago.
About Margaret:
Margaret Amatt is a bestselling Scottish author, professional daydreamer, and certified chocolate addict. She’s been making up stories for as long as she can remember – some of them even made it onto paper (and, tragically, onto floppy disks that no computer can read anymore). After two decades of writing in secret, she finally unleashed her first novel on the world in 2021, kicking off a ten-book series set on the stunning Isle of Mull.
Margaret has spent her whole life in Scotland’s breath-taking Highland Perthshire, despite her entire extended family coming from the Glasgow area. Her books are romantic and emotional, sweet and funny, and each one can be read as a standalone, but long-time readers know the joy of familiar faces popping up, adding to the chaos.
So, if you love relatable characters, sizzling chemistry, and plenty of banter, you’re in the right place – just don’t blame Margaret when you stay up way too late reading just one more chapter.

Imogen Payne
Imogen has written two long-running series and shows no signs of running out of ideas. You can visit lovely Lily Vale Village, or take a trip to the seaside at Sunny Shore Bay. A happy ending is guaranteed!
About Imogen:
Imogen Payne lives in the British countryside with a very well-trained husband. There she writes the romantic, dramatic and always uplifting Lily Vale Village and Sunny Shore Bay series.
When she's not writing, she's cooking up a storm in the kitchen, taking long walks through the nearby woods or snuggling up on the couch with a good book.

Alix Kelso
Alix has written several popular small-town series, including the long-running Foxglove Street. You could also visit Fairhill, or keep company with Mrs Wishmore.
About Alix:
Alix Kelso writes feel good, heartwarming stories filled with romance, family and friendship. She enjoys pottering in the kitchen, walking in the countryside, and reading all kinds of books.
Before becoming an author, Alix was a university lecturer and spent many lovely years teaching, writing academic papers, and speaking at conferences around the world. An avid fiction reader since childhood, she wrote many stories and novels in her spare time before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a published author.
She now has a long list of books waiting to be written, from romance to mystery and beyond.

I’m sure you’ll find something brilliant to enjoy from among all those books! Of course, there are many more British indie authors working hard to bring you wonderful small-town romance reads - I just couldn’t possibly fit them all in. Don’t overlook them because they’re not with publishers. You will definitely be missing out if you do.
Happy reading!
